Hi, my name is João, I’m a 17 years old basketball player from Portugal.
I’m a 6.45ft center who can also play as a small or power forward.
I’m looking for a great scholarship, that provides me the opportunity to study and play basketball in the best level. Currently at Dominican College and looking to transfer to a high level Academic University.
Following NCAA guidelines João’s high school GPA would convert to a 3.O U.S. equivalent.

2015/2016 - 1st place in Lisbon’s state championship division B with zero games lost (33-0) in Sport Lisboa e Benfica’s secondary team
2016/2017- 2nd place in Lisbon’s state championship division A in Sport Lisboa e Benfica. 4th place in the south conference of the national championship
2017/2018 – 5th place in Lisboa cup for Belenenses.
What makes you different?
I think that what makes me a different player is my commitment to the team and to the defensive process. I see myself more as a defensive than an offensive player, as we’re use to hear, offense wins games, defense wins championships. I’m always ready to learn, to practice, to help and to give my best in every game and every moment.
Why do you want to compete in college?
I decided to apply for an American university in order to be able to play basketball at a competitive level, because here in Portugal the student athlete status is underrated and universities don’t encourage people to play while studying. I believe that college basketball is the first step to be taken in order to reach something huge, it will be my opportunity to show off my skills in order to one day, hopefully, reach the professional level.
I want to graduate from college and to play basketball at the same time, and to give my best in both school and basketball.
Anything else we should know?
I have lived without my parents since I was 11. Although sometimes I find it to be really hard, this aspect is also one of the reasons that I have a strong personality and that I am who I am today. I’m used to dealing with hard moments and to overcome them independently and because of that I learned and developed strategies to be clear minded both in life and in the game itself, when needed.
