About Athlete

Hi, my name is Sofia Lumbreras and I am a track and field and cross country athlete from New Zealand. My goal is to continue my academic and sporting career in USA, where I can push myself further alongside world-class athletes. I am extremely dedicated and hard working in both my running and academics, and I look forward to being able to balance the two as a student-athlete in USA!

What makes you different?

I think the main thing that stands me apart from other athletes my age is that I have been involved in a wide range of sports over the past few years, and all to a high level. I have learnt to balance everything and take all the positives from each sport and use it to my advantage. This has made me extra versatile as an athlete. As a result, it has only been the last 2 years that I have become more and more serious about my running, but having the strength and endurance and stamina training from other sports such as swimming and netball, has really helped me grow. No matter what I am doing - whether it is playing sport, or studying, I give 100% and never ever give up! I respect my coaches as well as my teammates and have learnt so much from them and continue to do so. I believe I have developed a lot of resilience over the past couple of years when it comes to training hard for an event then having it cancelled due to COVID or sickness, and I have just put my head down and trained harder and now I am finally seeing the results!

Why do you want to compete in college?

I want to train at world class facilities and be pushed every day by top coaches and athletes from all over the world. Being from a small town in a tiny country (NZ), our facilities just don't compare with those available in USA, and being exposed day in and day out, to these training facilities and meeting and running with many top athletes will push me to be the best I can be and hopefully help achieve my goal of becoming a professional athlete one day!

College Goals?

I want to really push myself to be the best I can be, both through my sports and my academics. I would love to be accepted to a Division 1 college and compete with some of the best athletes in the world. I would also like to experience studying in another country, where the range of subjects and again the facilities are just amazing. I hope to join my two passions, sports and science, and study for a sports science or physiotherapy degree and make the most of this amazing opportunity.

Anything else we should know?

Through my sports and other extra curricula activities, I have developed great leadership skills, and this year I have been voted Head Girl at Havelock North High School (a school of 1100 students). I believe having these leadership skills has helped me to be a well-rounded student-athlete.
