ASM Scholarships

Frequently Asked Questions

“What about student visas?”

This is our most commonly asked question from parents. The visa responsibility financially falls on you, the parent. The fee is $450, your child must have a valid passport and then the university handles all the paperwork. Your child must be enrolled in the institution first and then paperwork can begin. Student visas are only issued for the time that your child is registered in school.  For more information and to apply for a student visa visit  https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/students.

Another frequently asked question is, “What happens when my child arrives in the US?”

Parents are concerned about who will pick up their son or daughter from the airport and how will they get to campus? All of this can be arranged for you with your coach. Your child is now a part of a team that essentially functions as a “family” and specific logistics can be worked out directly through communications with your child’s coach.

“What exactly does a sport scholarship cover?”

An athletic scholarship is an amount of financial aid awarded to a student-athlete from the college athletic department. These athletic scholarships are awarded based on the student’s athletic abilities and how they can contribute to the team. A coach decides who receives scholarships and how much they are awarded. For more on what a scholarship covers, please watch our CEO, Chris Vidal explains it here.

“What if my child does not like it in America?”

We understand for some athletes making the move to America can be a difficult change, and if for some reason your child becomes homesick or just doesn’t settle into the American way of life, then, of course, they can come home at any time, they are not contracted to the university for any set period of time. We do always advise our athletes to do at least a year because their credits can be transferred back to a university in their home country.

“How old do I need to be to obtain a sports scholarship in America?”

We recommend you to start the process 2 years before finishing high school because it is becoming more and more common for university coaches to sign their athletes 2-3 years before they will start and in some cases even further out. The process from your initial application to starting your scholarship can take anywhere between 6-24 months depending on your sport and ability level. Typically our undergraduate students are 14-19 years old. Transfer or post-graduate students range from 19-22 years old.
