If you are competing for the first time at the NCAA Division I or Division II level in the upcoming fall semester you must request your finalized amateurism certificate. This must be done before being eligible. This also includes transfers from junior colleges, the NAIA, international or Division III schools. According to the NCAA (http://www.ncaa.org/student-athletes/future/eligibility-center/what-amateurism), an amateur is “someone who does not have a written or verbal agreement with an agent, has not profited above his/her actual and necessary expenses or gained a competitive advantage in his/her sport.” This basically proves to schools and coaches that you are not a professional athlete.
To receive an amateurism certification, prospective student-athletes should:
- Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center;
- Completely and accurately fill out the “Sports Participation” section during registration;
- Request final amateurism certification promptly; and
- Monitor tasks assigned to their account.
