ASM Scholarships

What should I be doing now?

Starting early is the name of the game in college recruiting. Here at ASM Scholarships, we recommend you start your process in your first year in high school. Waiting until your last year not only is considered late, but you are less likely to receive the number of scholarship monies you desire because universities have already been given out to athletes who started early. Now, that is not saying that you have to start in your freshman year, but it does give you the best chance at the highest amount of scholarship dollars. So, what should you be doing now?

To begin with, below is a list of things to tackle as a freshman in high school to get your recruitment process started.

  1. Make being a student and an athlete your passion. You must love athletics and academics.
  2. Implement wise decision making on and off the field. Colleges and universities are looking for the whole, healthy student athlete.
  3. Do your research. Learn what colleges are looking for in your sport. What level do you need to strive for as a player?
  4. Be diligent on the field as well as in the classroom. After all, we are talking about college and you will need solid grades.
  5. Become familiar with the NCAA Guide for the College Bound Student Athlete.
  6. Make a list of target and ideal universities you would like to attend. Make a game plan.
  7. Plan ahead, estimate when you are going to take the mandatory tests to get into college. The SAT, the ACT and the TOEFL if necessary are given multiple times through out the years. See more here.

Lastly, stay ahead of the game, it would be great if you can start the following below.
1. Speak with your coach and request what he/she projects for you as a college athlete.
2. Do your research and find out what colleges will be a good match for your level of athletic skill.
3. Create an athletic resume.
4. If you have any questions about getting started, reach out to our team and we will help you create a timeline that ends in success!
